Gage Dispersed – Campground review

CR-020, Deming NM 88030

If you enjoy being off grid and dry camping on BLM Lands, Gage Dispersed Campground is the place for you.

Gage Dispersed Campground is located only few mile south of Interstate 10 in southwest New Mexico. It is located on BLM lands and can easily accommodate any size RV. There is a 14 night limit for campers but there is no cost associated with staying here. During my stay, I was joined by another Class A (35′), several travel trailers, a large fifth wheel. The camping are is large and provides each camper ample space and privacy.

How to get here…

If traveling west on Interstate 10 take the exit to Gage, which is approximately 18 miles west of Demming, NM. After exiting make a left at the stop sign and go under the bridge. On your right you will see an Exxon Station that includes a souvenir store and more importantly a Dairy Queen (Hint I love blizzards). Keep left of the store and the paved road, County Road 020, will continue south. Be careful when crossing the Cattle guard as it is more bumpy than most. After two miles the road will start to curve east however if you look right you will see a dirt road. Turn onto the dirt road and in a half of mile you will come to a large open area. The road up to the camping area is not too bad but there are bumps so take you time.

What to expect

The dry camping area appears to be an old “gravel” mine and is very solid. There are a few significant ruts and soft places scattered across the area, but take your time and you should not have any worries.

The area is large and perfect for a large RV. However, if you are more adventurous additional dry camping in this BLM area can be found well beyond the established dispersed area. From my site I could see a few brave campers deep into the desert with their camp all set up.

This is not the most scenic site but it is practical and provided a very quiet setting. It has decent cell signal and every evening I was treated to a fantastic sunset and Oreo Blizzard.

If traveling across Southern NM between Arizona and Las Cruses, New Mexico stop for a night (or more) and lose track of time!

  1. Hi- I’ve done quite a few travels & hikes like yourself and a friend shared your recent posts which i thoroughly enjoyed reviewing.

I’m from Ohio originally. Look forward to connecting.

    • Thank you Marianne I apology for not keep up with this but I would love to have you as a follower. What part of Ohio. I am from Akron and Newark.

      • Nice I grew up in Akron then moved to Central Ohio (Newark). Lived there 25 years before selling it all and hitting the road.

      • Nice! I travel for work i rent audiovisual for tradeshows & conventions basically i work remotely & fill in with fun trips inbetween. Xmas was Scottsdale, Sedona hiking & leisure. So sad Ohio State lost but the town was a buzz!

I’ve been to Sedona 16 times & plan to take ppl from my home town on excursions out that way. I live in a suburb of Orlando!

      • Can’t go wrong with Sedona for sure! Sounds to me like you need to try the full-time RV life

      • I would like to hear your likes and dislikes of RVng. I myself have not tried it — and what part of the country have you found most enjoyable and why?

      • The RV life has been fun except when I have to get something fixed which seems to be ALL the time. And of course when they see a 42 foot diesel motorhome pull in the lot they see money. I started in Ohio. Traveled down the east coast and spent thanksgiving till June in FLorida then this past summer I headed west. My favorite areas was probably Colorado but camping there was quite expensive. I am did like NM and they have some pretty good deals there as well as Arizona. I probably have enjoyed Florida because of the birds and weather but like CO, NM and AZ for the hiking and different wildlife. Maybe you should sell it all and hit the road.

Who recommended you to start following my blog?

      • A friend from GA! Vicki… she started noticing you were going places i’ve been or plan to go! I would like to hear more about your adventures when time permits! My next trip out west is April… & i just finished sending a friend from Colorado a Sedona must “see” agenda for their February trip.

      • awesome … thank Vicki for sending me your way. Are you a solo rver or traveling with family?

      • Feel free to ask any thing that may interest you. I am currently in SE Arizona near Tombstone. I still have not made an official visit to that famous cowboy town but I did check out Chirichoa national monument and it was really cool. I hope to post a blog but feeling lazy LOL

      • I went through Tombstone back in the day… Bisbee is interesting if your in the general area.

  2. The large open space is gated off now, and is a working mine. There are lots of roads into the desert, but many of them have ruts. We found a nice spot with a van with no high clearance.

    • Hi Leslie,

Thank you for the note! Sorry to hear it was closed off! I am not surprised you found a nice spot that area seemed to be full of possibilities especially if you aren’t driving a 42 foot diesel pusher. I have since sold my rig and settled in Alabama but am looking to get back on the road. Maybe not full time but in large blocks of time. I need to check off a few items on my bucket list.

thanks again for taking the time to comment and read my post. Hope they can be help down the road.

      Bill
