50,000 Silver Dollar

Exit 16 Interstate 90 Haugan, MT 59842

If you need an affordable place to stay while traveling on I-90 in Western Montana this place is for you.

Just off I-90, the 50,000 Silver Dollar offers a ton of parking spaces. These spaces are free, first come first serve and mostly level. If you are lucky you can score one of about 12 sites with 50/30 amp power.

Each site comes with a very nice picnic table and fire wing. However due to the time of year campfires were prohibited. In addition to the campsites the 50,000 Silver Dollar features the state’s largest gift shop, a family style restaurant, a gas station, and a convenience store.

Located in the middle of the Lolo National Forest, the 50,000 Silver Dollar is a great home base for many recreational opportunities. There are hundreds of miles of forest roads for ATV, Jeep, or Snowmobile travel, and many single track trails for hiking, biking, or motorcycling. Nearby attractions include the historic Savanac tree nursery, Lookout Pass ski area (16 miles), the route of the Hiawatha bike trail (10 miles), and the Silver Mountain ski area and bike park (40 miles). Although a longer drive it is still not too far (few hours) from Glacier and Yellowstone National Parks.

I am not sure the maximum length of stay permitted but they do prohibit “long term parking”. My assumption is that they do not want you to call this place home and live on months end. I stayed 3 nights with no incident. I noticed others that seemed have been staying longer.

This is a fairly popular and well know location, so if you need electric try to arrive early as the sites do fill up in the evening. If the camp is full when you arrive there are ample places in the Gas Station Parking lot with the truck drivers. It may be noisy but it still provides a place to get off the road and catch a few winks.

This was a great find and will definitely be back when I am in the area!

  1. How cool! Say hello from
Vic and I. I thought of him today. I took my 78yr old aunt and her granddaughter to Hoffmaster for what we thought would be an hour hike. Let’s just say we blazed our own trail and made it 2 hours.
